THE MOVIE LIST: Crowdsourcing is the New Chicken Soup

Last night, feeling miserable from a cold, I put out a crowdsourcing call on Facebook. (I’d done this once before when seeking feedback on a set of photographs to use — or not — for professional purposes. It was very helpful, and fun!)

According to Wikipedia,

Crowdsourcing is the act of outsourcing tasks, traditionally performed by an employee or contractor, to an undefined, large group of people or community (a crowd), through an open call. … The term has become popular with businesses, authors, and journalists as shorthand for the trend of leveraging the mass collaboration enabled by Web 2.0  technologies to achieve business goals.

Me: “I have a bad cold and need some mindless entertainment. Can anybody suggest a good movie?”

The responses poured in. I felt very cared for and attended to. I’d already finished off the Matzah Ball soup I’d made a few days earlier. Nobody else was around to entertain me or take care of me. But beyond that, instead of just being entertained by others’ Facebook posts, I was getting direct attention to my request. It was quick and easy, and took my mind off my drippy nose. And, of course, the responses helped me solve the problem of what to do with the rest of my boring (sick) evening. I had a good night’s sleep and feel much better today, thank you.

I’ve now put the list of movie recommendations into a Facebook Note because I feel they’re worth saving and other folks might appreciate the list, too. I can refer back next time I need an idea, whether I’m sick or not. Of course, please feel free to send me any additions to this list.
